Everyone has a story to tell. It may be an interesting family history, or an event/experience that made you laugh, or made you cry. Perhaps you have a passion for something that you want to share, or perhaps you just enjoy writing as a means of self-exploration, a means of release. Life Writing covers all areas of non-fiction – autobiography, biography, memoir, travel – and the market is booming. We are fascinated by one another’s real life stories, whether they’re heart-warming or heart-breaking: the Internet, bookshops, and magazine racks are full of them. Professional writer David Tomlinson offers a step-by-step introduction to the narrative techniques of creative non-fiction, covering the selection of subject matter, identification of themes, and tips on how to develop a strong storytelling voice. The workshop will present a series of inspirational Life Writing examples (from the likes of Virginia Woolf and Earnest Hemingway, among many others), which will be followed by simple writing exercises designed to refine your own unique powers of expression. David was a writer/producer at the BBC, where he also ran a writing workshop. He has a PhD in Creative Writing (specialising in memoir), has published a number of humorous articles from camper van ventures in Germany to the menace of electric scooters in Spain, and is currently in the middle of a commission to write a series of children’s books for an American publisher. If you have ambitions to be published, or just want to write for pleasure, this workshop will get you started. No previous experience is required, just a desire to explore your outlook on the world. Cancelations within 4 weeks of the event will not be refunded, however bookaclass.org will look to reschedule you onto a future bookaclass.org event. This option is at the discretion of bookaclass.org. Your Right to Cancel If you are a customer living in the United Kingdom or the European Union you have the right to cancel your contract to purchase services from us within 14 days of purchase without giving notice. The cancellation period will end 14 days from the date of purchase when you purchased a service.
