Acrylic Painting Course
Starts Tuesday 7 January 2025 - Scarborough
Available spaces
This 6-week acrylic painting course is designed for beginners looking to explore the vibrant and versatile world of acrylics. With guidance, you will learn foundational painting techniques and develop your skills while creating your own unique artworks. Week 1: We'll jump straight in and start a painting based on a limited colour palette. We'll have an image for you. This first session, with your limited palette, is just feeling how the paint works. You'll be shown how to mix your limited range of hues with a palette knife. There'll be guidance on how to apply paint. Chris will talk a lot about the properties of acrylic, the right brushes to use, the various suitable grounds etc. Week 2: We'll begin this session by using the limited range of colours you used in Week 1 and we'll create an underpainting. This is a sort of sketch in paint that we'll create in 20 minutes or less. We'll then put these paintings to one side to dry. Then we'll create a colour wheel and turn our attention to how colour works. We'll focus on primary, secondary and tertiary colours, as well as the use of values and shades. Week 3: This week we'll use the underpainting we created in Week 2 and start to build on it using our colour theory knowledge. It's all new at this point so there'll be lots where Chris is helping out and giving guidance and generally coaching on ways you can use your acrylics. There is no one-size-fits-all, so individual nuance will be encouraged. Week 4: This week, we'll set up a still life and paint from life. This is never easy at first but let's give it a go! First you'll draw in your subject and then start mixing and applying your paint. Always with guidance. You might want to take a photo of the still life so you can carry on at home. Week 5: Freeform play and experimentation. Let's let go and explore the potential of acrylics. There'll be a 15-minute slide show looking at some way-out ways of using acrylics and then you'll be given a larger piece of canvas and encouraged to explore with guidance and tips. It'll be fun! Week 6: By now, you'll have been on quite a journey, so let's do one last painting. It can be a still life, it can be observed from a print out or it might be the freeform method again. You decide. Every Tuesday Starts 7 January - 11 February 2024 1.30pm - 4pm with Christopher Shaw This workshop takes place at: North Yorks Art School 2-4 South Street Scarborough YO11 2BP Includes all materials and refreshments.
